Why Cultural Preservation Matters: The Role of the GEMA Cultural Association
May 7, 2014In a rapidly changing world, staying connected to our cultural roots has never been more important. For the communities of Gikuyu, Embu, Meru, and Akamba, collectively known as GEMA, the GEMA Cultural Association (GCA) serves as a guiding force, uniting us through shared history, values, and aspirations. From our origins to the present day, GCA strives to bring together GEMA people from across Kenya and the global diaspora, promoting unity, cultural preservation, and socio-economic progress.
Founded in 1971, the original GEMA organization was born out of necessity. During colonial rule, our people faced dispossession and displacement, losing their ancestral lands and being forced into labor. GEMA was established as a means of empowerment—reclaiming land and restoring hope. Over the years, GEMA has evolved in response to political shifts and societal changes, re-emerging as the GEMA Cultural Association (GCA) in 2008 to continue serving our communities with renewed vigor.
